Al-Moallem: We Believe that the USA is the Major Player against Syria and the Rest are Its Instruments

Aug 28, 2012 - original at:  http://208.43.232.81/eng/22/2012/08/28/438468.htm

LONDON, (SANA) – Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem affirmed that he believes the USA is the major player against Syria and the rest are its instruments under its control.

In an interview with the British newspaper the Independent conducted by journalist Robert Fisk, al-Moallem said that America is behind Syria's violence, and that he doesn't understand its slogan of fighting international terrorism when it's supporting terrorism in Syria.

He pointed out that over 60% of the country's violence comes from abroad, specifically from Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, with the United States exercising its influence over all others, adding "When the Americans say, 'We are supplying the opposition with sophisticated instruments of telecommunications', isn't this part of a military effort, when they supply the opposition with USD 25 million?"

Al-Moallem pointed out that the goal of what is happening in Syria is to pressure it regarding its relations with Iran and resistance movements in Palestine and Lebanon, saying "We were told by some Western envoy at the beginning of this crisis that relations between Syria and Iran, Syria and Hezbollah, Syria and Hamas are the major elements behind this crisis. If we settle this issue, they will help end the crisis."

He went on to say that the Americans succeeded in frightening the Gulf countries about Iran's nuclear capabilities, persuading them to buy arms from the US and fulfilling Franklin Roosevelt's 1936 dream of maintaining bases for oil transportation.

Regarding the European positions towards the Syrian crisis, al-Moallem said "I tell the Europeans: I don't understand your slogan about the welfare of the Syrian people when you are supporting 17 resolutions against the welfare of the Syrian people."

As for Qatari-Syrian relations, al-Moallem noted that Qatar was the one who reneged on these relations, saying that he met Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in Doha in November 2011 when the Arab League launched its initiative which led to sending observers to Syria, pointing out that during this meeting, Hamad told him "If you agree to this initiative, I will change the attitude of Al Jazeera and I will tell Sheikh Yusef al-Qaradawi to support Syria and reconciliation, and I have put down some billions of dollars to rebuild Syria."

He added that he asked Hamad about having had very close relations with Muammar Gaddafi and why he sent his aircrafts to attack Libya and be part of NATO, with Hamad responding by saying simply "Because we don't want to lose our momentum in Tunis and Egypt."

Al-Moallem stressed that the crisis started with legitimate demands subsequently addressed by legislation and reforms and even a new constitution, but then came foreign elements who used these legitimate demands to hijack the peaceful agenda of the people.

"I don't accept as a citizen to return back centuries to a regime which can bring Syria backwards. In principle …no government in the world can accept an armed terrorist group, some of them coming from abroad, controlling streets and villages in the name of jihad," he said, adding that as a Syrian citizen, he is sad to see what's happening in Syria, compared with how it was two years ago.

"There are many Syrians like me – eager to see Syria return to the old days when we were proud of our security," he concluded.

Own comment:
(1) The results of the Darrya killings of the armed gangs can be seen in the following video below. Very graphic material portraying a lot of dead people. This is all very sad. Why did they take up arms in the first place? Why couldn't these people have invested in dialogue with the Syrian Government? You can't expect to run around with guns, killing people who disagree with you, and then survive.

Aug 15, 2012

Original at:  http://208.43.232.81/eng/22/2012/08/15/436563.htm

MINSK/MOSCOW, (SANA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed on Wednesday that Russia will not allow anyone to thwart Geneva Agreement on Syria, calling for commitment to this agreement.

In a statement in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, Lavrov affirmed that there is no other solution to the crisis in Syria other than that which is based on respecting the principles of the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of Syria and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries.

He said that it is necessary to exert pressure on all Syrian sides and to stop encouraging the opposition to continue armed fighting.

The Russian Foreign Minister noted that Russia seeks to obtain from the Western countries an answer on the extent of their readiness to commit to what was agreed on at Geneva meeting, adding that if the answer was yes, he would question why no tangible measures have been taken by these countries towards implementing the agreement.

He pointed out that the Russian-Chinese veto against draft resolutions on Syria came to defend the principles of the UN Charter, while the American partners used the veto to thwart decisions that have been taken.

Russia: Withdrawal of UNSMIS Would Further Complicate the Situation in Syria and the Region

Russia on Wednesday stressed that it supports the continuation of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS).

A well-informed source at the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow sees that halting the presence of the UN in Syria should not be allowed given that it is considered a main source for obtaining objective information on what is taking place in the country.

The source highlighted the unbiased stance adopted by the UN observers since the beginning of their work in Syria in terms of recording the cases of violations against the peace plan by the parties in Syria.

The source also underscored the reduction in the level of violence noticed since the first weeks of the international observers' work.

The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified withdrawing the UNSMIS would further complicate the situation in Syria and the region in general to a large extent.

A source at the Press and Media Department at the Ministry said Russia calls for the UNSMIS to continue in Syria, adding that the withdrawal under the current circumstances would leave serious negative consequences on Syria and the entire region.

The source added that the presence of the UN mission could take other forms according to the reality on the ground.

Bogdanov: The Audio Recording Posted by Saudi Website Fake

The Russian President's Special Envoy to the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov stressed that the audio recording posted by the website of the Saudi al-Watan newspaper claiming to having held an interview with him two days ago is fake.

In a phone call with Russia Today TV channel, Bogdanov affirmed that he made no statements on the situation in Syria recently, denying particularly those related to the brother of President Bashar al-Assad.

"I cannot say that the brother of the Syrian President was injured in his legs as we know very well that he was not at the meeting of the crisis cell at the time of the explosion which claimed the lives of a number of Syrian military and security leaders and injured others," Bogdanov added.

He described the purported interview to be entirely fabricated from A to Z.

The Russian official reiterated his country's clear stance towards the crisis in Syria which is based on that the Syrian people alone are the decision-makers in choosing their leadership.

He added that Russia has, since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, rejected foreign interference and called for dialogue and political settlement.

Bogdanov, who is on his annual vacation, said that it is inappropriate that some resort to fabrication to make fake scoop at the expense of sensitive issues that affect peoples' destiny.

Russia Today TV indicated that anyone can listen to Bogdanov's real voice on its website.

Internal Trade Minister: The U.S. and EU Sanctions on Syria Target the Livelihood of the Syrian People

Aug 03, 2012

MOSCOW, (SANA)- Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Qadri Jamil, said Syria is facing an unfair Western economic blockade, stressing that the Western and U.S. sanctions on Syria target the Syrian people's livelihood.

In a press conference in the Russian capital following meeting Russian officials, Jamil said that the Western-U.S. sanctions are unilateral and contradictory to international law, and that they prevent the Syrian people from receiving essential supplies, adding that the important thing now is to overcome the sanctions' effects, which is linked to resolving the crisis in Syria in a peaceful manner that ends bloodshed.

He said that the western countries' position regarding what is happening to Syria is hypocritical as they don't want an end to bloodshed; rather the opposite, as they are aware of the existence of extremist terrorists committing crimes against Syrians and they support them while at the same time talking about political solutions.

Jamil stressed that the crisis caused urgent economic issues, and while the U.S. and Europe claim that the sanctions are aimed at the government, these claims are hypocritical and incorrect as the sanctions affect every single Syrians, adding that the west and the U.S. aren't the ones who may decide the future of the Syrian people.

He said that current Syrian government which includes the peaceful Syrian opposition is the first step towards a full national unity government, and that national reconciliation is a central issue that can only be achieved by preventing foreign interference and abandoning violence, noting that hardliners among the opposition don't want dialogue.

Jamil said that the main issue is preserving Syria, and that the Syrian leadership has decided to head east in terms of politics and economy, underlining the old and historic relations between Syria and Russia.

He affirmed that dialogue is the basis for resolving the Syrian crisis, and that making preconditions such as the abdication of the leadership prior to dialogue is unacceptable and that such requests aims to prevent a political solution which requires dialogue among all sides.

Jamil described the talks in Moscow as constructive as both sides agreed on boosting economic cooperation between Syria and Russia in various areas, adding that Russia wants to help and support the Syrian people to overcome the current crisis, and that the two sides reached agreements which will be realized within the next few days and weeks.

He also noted that the economic pressure and the unjust siege against Syria lowered the buying power of the Syrian Pound and prevented the import of basic goods, while petroleum imports also suffered as local production isn't sufficient, affirming that those who prevent Syria from importing goods want to worsen the crisis and don't want solutions, which is why talks were held with Russia and other friends to resolve this issue.

Jamil went on to say that Russia's position in support of a political solution practically broke the media blockade and prevented a repetition of what happened in Iraq and Libya.

Regarding the printing of Syrian currency in Russia, said that this is a triumph since there were those who through that if they ceased printing money for Syria, it would cause it an economic and financial crisis, adding that Syria's isn't alone in this battle.

In turn, Finance Minister Mohammad al-Jleilati pointed out that Syria had contracts with a European country to print currency, and due to the sanctions this country refrained from delivering this currency which is why Syria turned to Russia and printed currency and stored in to replace damaged notes, in addition to introducing extra currency according to changes in the GDP, affirming that the printing of currency has no effect on inflation.

Al-Jleilati said that there's a possibility for Russia to provide foreign currency loans to help Syria during this crisis, adding that Syria has sufficient reserves but the current conditions require extra reserves.

For his part, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Abdul-Fattah Ammoura, stressed that Syria welcomed the plan of the UN envoy Kofi Annan and its six points, agreed on it and has put it into effect, noting that Annan and the UN observers was made aware of the crimes committed by terrorist groups against Syria.

He said that Anan's plan has been a Syrian demand in the first place to have the crisis resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, but it is the other parties who do not want this plan to succeed and do not seek a peaceful solution to the crisis.

He said that Annan saw support for his plan from the Syrian government, while the other side resorted to foiling it, affirming that the Russian position is principled, moral and in line with the UN charter and international law.

Ammoura stressed that the Syrian people are steadfast in the face of what they are faced with and seek the independence of Syria's sovereign decision, adding that the Western countries have turned away from what they committed to at the Geneva meeting regarding the necessity of finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria.

Speaking of the repercussions of the unfair Western ban imposed on Syria, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Said Hneidi, said that because of this ban, Syria's oil production has dropped down to less than 200, 000 barrels per day.

Hneidi said that the Syrian government's current directive is to boost relation with Russia in terms of petroleum, noting that these relations are ongoing and that several Russian companies are still operating in this field in Syria.

He explained that Syria is an exporter of crude oil and an importer of some products, so the European embargo affected the Syrian energy sector which is why the government is working diligently to provide all Syrians' fuel needs.

Hneidi said that talks with Russian petroleum companies reached good results, laying down a plan to provide Syrians' needs.

In turn, Transport Minister Mahmoud Said said that the European embargo on the transport section and plane spare parts directly targets Syrian citizens and their activities, and that his ministry is working with the Russian Airlines (Aeroflot) to relieve the effects of the embargo and maintain the activities of the Syrian Airlines.

He also noted that the embargo also restricts marine transport, in addition to prohibiting Syrian Airlines planes to land in European airports, which was a sudden step that ignored thousands of reservations made by passengers, adding that work is ongoing to restore voyages in cooperation with Aeroflot.

Denisov: Syrian Delegation's Visit to Moscow Shows Syrians' Confidence in Establishing Stability in Their Country

First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Denisov said that the visit of the Syrian economic delegation to Moscow at this time and the talks it held show the Syrians' confidence in establishing stability in their country and proves that the Syrian leadership intends to develop the country after the crisis, which Russia supports strongly.

During his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Jamil, Denisov said that Russia always considered the future in its relations with Syria, reiterating Russia's rejection of any interference in Syria's affairs or the use of force against it.

He also noted that the west and some countries in the Middle East made no efforts to influence the Syrian opposition; rather they provoked them and encouraged them to assume more extremist stances, supporting them in political, financial and military ways.

For his part, Jamil said that the talks held by the delegation with Russian officials were positive and helpful, adding that this visit and the talks show that the Syrian government is thinking about the work program for the first day after the resolution of the crisis which is due to conviction on part of the Syrian leadership and people that they are able to overcome the crisis.

He said that President Bashar al-Assad proposed heading towards the East both politically and economically, with Russia being the beginning of the East for Syria.

In a statement to SANA's correspondent in Moscow, Denisov underlined the deep-rooted relations between Syria and Russia, affirming that Russia's position regarding Syria is firm and cannot change and based on ending violence and armed conflict, noting that the Syrian government is prepared to listen to these suggestion and implement them, while the opposition continuously rejects the cessation of violence and bloodshed.

He reiterated Russia's rejection of any foreign interference in Syria's affairs, specifically interference by force, adding that Russia regrets Kofi Annan's resignation because he did important work and presented a realistic six-point plan, noting that violence would have ended in Syria if all sides implemented this plan, but the opposition – encouraged by some external forces – absolutely rejected the cessation of violence and bloodshed.

original at:  http://208.43.232.81/eng/337/2012/08/03/434617.htm

Aug 03, 2012

DAMASCUS, (SANA)_ Mohamad Salim Qabbani, a former collaborator with Mass Media means of lies and fabrications against Syria, narrated last night to Syrian Satellite TV Channel his personal involvement in fabricating news about the ongoing in Syria.

Qabbani disclosed the presence of scores of specialized so-called news rooms to invent, edit and fabricate news items and stories to be aired by scores of media outlets like B.B.C., al-Jazeera, France 24, al-Arabyia and others.

Qabbani pointed out that he made calls to and contacts with scores of media outlets to tell them different invented stories about the city of Homs when he was in Lebanon in Irsal town.

Qabbani added that armed terrorist used to shoot at the demonstrators in different regions as to accuse the Syrian Army and Security of doing so.

"The demonstrators felt bored if they weren't to provoke security forces; so the demonstrators used to hurl Molotov or stones at the security forces which could not but defend themselves,'' said Qabbani.

He spoke about ways and means of taken photos montage and editing in collaboration with scores of professional photographers hired by different media outlets.

Qabbani disclosed some information about the secret life of some figures who worked on the shedding of Syrian blood at the orders of foreign sides and countries, asserting that they were drug-addicted and hired killers.

Qabbani, who said that he was threatened by the armed terrorist groups to collaborate with them, underscored that he had no alternative out of fear for his family and life from the terrorists but to collaborate with them in filming and fabricating lies and out-of-place and of–time hypothetical stories and events.

"All of the satellite channels which contacted me for live reports about events in and from Homs did know that I wasn't talking to them from Homs but from Lebanon,'' disclosed Qabbani.

Qabbani also told the interviewer about the real identity and behavior of scores of some persons involved in fabricating and inventing events and stories like Khalid Abu Salah, who once appeared on TV grasping a killed child accusing the army of killing it, while this child was killed in an explosion of explosive devices under preparation by the armed groups.

Qabbani added that the much talked about al-Khaldiyeh massacre was caused too by an explosion of the then under-preparation explosive devices by the terrorists in a building in the city of Homs.

Media outlets of lies and fabrications used this explosion as a pretext to accuse the Syrian Army of killing civilians and to steer public opinion against countries which support the truth in Syria.

''I surrendered myself to the Syrian authorities because all what we have done is wrong. I didn't want the Syrian blood to be shed. Weapons bring destruction and killing and I don't want to destroy Syria which should never be destroyed,'' added Qabbani.

Qabbani urged every person who can benefit the authorities with a piece of information to surrender himself and everyone who carries weapons to surrender himself and weapons and would be released as it was the case with him.

Some Countries support Terrorism in Syria - Syrian Letter to UN

Aug 02, 2012

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – In a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and chairman of the Security Council on the support provided by some states to terrorist attacks on the Syrian territories, Foreign and expatriates Ministry stressed on Thursday that this support contradicts with the UN Security Council resolutions related to combating terrorism and proves double standards that will reflect negatively on some states that offer support to terrorism and the world states at large.

The Ministry said that Syria calls on the Security Council to exert pressure on the states that offer support to terrorism in Syria to stop their support according to the Security Council resolutions, stressing commitment to the plan of UN Envoy to Syria kofi Annan and welcoming the results of Geneva meeting.

The Ministry added that the truth of events in Syria is becoming clearer continuously, pointing out that the pressure exerted on Syria by the US, France, Britain and Turkey show the hidden goals against Syria and its people's achievements.

The Ministry said that in spite of the misinformation campaigns launched against Syria, the obvious truth is that the goal is changing the balances in the region and subjecting its states to western hegemony.

The Ministry mentioned the recent decision taken by the US administration few days ago allowing the US Treasury Department to offer financial support to the so-called 'Free Syrian Army' which is composed of armed terrorist groups that commit crimes against thousands of innocent civilians in Syria.

It added that the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the state of Qatar and Turkey in financing and arming the terrorist groups is obvious to everyone as French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, whose country is chairing the Security Council, said at a press conference on July 29, 2012 that Saudi and Qatar are offering financial and military support to the terrorist groups.

The Ministry pointed out that those who call for holding Security Council meetings are the ones who caused the catastrophe in Aleppo through supporting terrorism and arming the terrorist groups depending essentially on the role of the Turkish Government which opened its airports and borders to terrorists from al-Qaeda, Salafis and Jihadists and offered them all facilitations to send them to Syria.

The Ministry said that Turkey also established headquarters for military operations to manage the terrorist attacks against citizens in Syria in Aleppo and other Syrian cities, adding that these headquarters are operated by the Saudi, Qatari, Israeli and US intelligence agencies.
